We are delighted to confirm that winger/centre Luis Roberts has signed an extension to his contract that will see him remain at Avery Fields until the end of the 2028 season.
Luis, 24, signed for the Canes ahead of the 2025 League One season following his release from Super League side Leeds Rhinos. Playing 15 times and scoring eight tries in his first season in the Midlands, his efforts on the wing earned him a contract extension until the end of the 2026 season.
Luis continued to kick on last season, scoring a further eight tries in 19 appearances as he routinely played either on the wing or as centre in partnership with new signing Aidan McGowan. A couple of failed head-injury assessments in May meant he would miss out for two months under safely protocols, but he showed his eagerness to get back into the fold by scoring in two of his first three games after returning from injury.
Luis will no doubt be pushing to secure a starting place in a brand new Birmingham squad as we embark in what promises to be an exciting 2027 Championship season.
On his decision to extend his stay with Birmingham, Luis said:
When Mark spoke to me towards the end of last season about my future at the club, it was a no brainer for me to re-sign again with the Canes.
I’ve really enjoyed my time with the club over the last two seasons, and to be able to go again with this group of lads and coaching staff was a really easy choice for me.
I’m looking forward to getting stuck in next season as the club goes through it’s next stage following the rebrand to Birmingham.
Men’s Head Coach Mark Dunning said:
I’m delighted that Luis has committed his future to the club until 2028.
Luis has settled well here at the Canes and is enjoying his rugby again, which is great as we certainly enjoy having him here as part of a competitive group.
He showed his value and versatility last season and – as with everyone else associated with the club – we’re now chasing consistency and continued development.
He has a big pre-season ahead of him, and we have already set him some targets that will enhance him and his game further in 2027 and beyond. If he rises to the challenge, everyone at the club will be very happy watching Luis rip it up in a Birmingham shirt next year.
Luis is just our first piece of squad news ahead of our first season as Birmingham Hurricanes, and we have plenty more in the tank to share with you over the coming weeks. Watch this space!
