We are delighted to confirm that talismanic half-back Lewis Else has signed an extension to his contract that will keep him at Avery Fields until at least the end of the 2029 season.
Else, 26, joined the Canes at the start of this season from fellow Championship side Rochdale Hornets on a two-year deal until the end of the 2027 season. He has been a regular feature in the starting line-up, playing 23 times and scoring no fewer than 15 tries (a feat only bested by winger Matty Chrimes (23) and centre/second-rower Ryan Johnson (17)), as well as kicking ten goals. That impressive haul only adds to a consistently prolific try-scoring haul that has seen the plucky half score 67 tries in 116 appearances.
Knowing what he brings to the team and that many Championship clubs – as well as some Super League clubs – might be interested in his services, it is no surprise that Mark made the decision to negotiate an extension and ensure a key part of his spine will feature in the next Championship campaigns to come.
Lewis had this to say on signing the extension to his contract:
I’m really pleased to commit at least the next three years of my career to the Canes. The club is improving year on year and I’m excited to be a part of the club’s future and to play my part in helping the club grow as it brings the sport to a non-heartlands area.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first year in a Canes shirt. We’ve had a fantastic first year in the Championship and I feel our best is still to come as we head into the play-offs. These types of games are the reason most rugby players aspire to play the sport and we’re ready to show why we deserve a seat at the table.
I also want to thank the Canes fans for making me feel so welcome in my first season, and I hope I can repay that support on Saturday as well as over the next three seasons.

I’m delighted that Lewis has committed himself to the club until 2029. It shows a great commitment to the club and the journey we’re on.
Since arriving at the club he has slotted in really well and has built up some great relationships with those around him. He’s a pleasure to coach and I’m looking forward to working with him.
He’s been one of the standout halfbacks in the competition this year and with the stability of his extension – and some hard work – we expect to see plenty more progression from him, which I’m sure everyone connected to our club will be very happy to know will be in a Canes shirt.
Lewis’s contract extension is a nice bit of early news for Canes fans ahead of this season coming to an end, but it’s just the start for us as we also look ahead to the 2027 season and beyond.
