We are delighted to confirm that centre Ryan Johnson has signed an extension to his contract that will see him remain a Cane until the end of the 2028 season.
Johnno, 25, has been a regular feature of the Hurricanes’ lineup since 2023 but had been featuring regularly for fellow Championship outfit Sheffield Eagles during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He would join Midlands (then in League One) on a mix of loan and dual-registration deals during the 2023/2024 seasons, scoring 11 tries in 25 appearances. Clearly enjoying his time with the club, Ryan opted to make this permanent by signing a two-year contract following the conclusion of the 2024 season.
Since joining the Canes on a permanent basis, he has routinely played at right centre with fellow ex-Eagle Matty Chrimes, with the pair providing a formidable attacking threat on the right edge. Ryan himself has gone on to score a further 17 tries in 29 appearances over the last 18 months, including four tries during the Canes record 110-0 win over Aberavon Fighting Irish.
Arguably enjoying his best rugby to date in a Canes shirt, Ryan has joined his partner in Chrime(s) by committing to the club for a further seasons as we continue to grow the game in the region.
Speaking with CanesTV, Head Coach Mark Dunning had this to say on securing Johnno until 2028:
We’re delighted that Ryan has agreed to remain at the club for another two years.
He has worked really hard on himself and his game and it’s good to see that starting to pay off with his performances on the field.
There is lots more to come from him in the years ahead, and knowing that will be in a Canes shirt is very exciting for both us and those who will be watching him in the stands.
CanesTV also spoke with Ryan about his decision to extend until 2028:
I’m buzzing to get another two years sorted with the Canes. I’m really enjoying my time at the club and it felt like a no brainer to sign again.
There’s something special building here – both on and off the field – and I’m excited to be part of what’s coming next. I feel like I’m playing my best rugby here and can’t wait to keep help building rugby league up here in the Midlands.
Johnno joins Matty Chrimes, Mikey Wood and Captain Jon-Luke Kirby in committing to the Canes for 2028, and we’re sure that Mark, Leigh and co will be looking to tie down a number of other players in due course – so watch this space!
