WOOD COMMITS FOR TWO MORE YEARS

We are delighted to confirm that Mikey Wood has signing a two-year extension to his Hurricanes contract. Already committed for the upcoming 2026 season, this deal sees our 2025 Coaches’ Player and Players’ Player of the Year until the end of the 2028 season.

Mikey, 29, joined the Canes during the 2025 pre-season following the expiry of his Swinton Lions contract and immediately slotted into the #13 role. Playing 20 times and scoring a solitary try away at Newcastle Thunder, Mikey’s exceptional work rate as loose forward was demonstrated both with ball in hand and in defence. Not afraid to do the big minutes and capable of maintaining a strong performance throughout, his efforts earned him the plaudits of coaches and players alike at our End of Season Awards at the Alex. He would also go on to hit a career milestone of 200 professional appearances (with just under 10% of those games happening in a Canes shirt).

Despite already being committed to the Canes f0r the next 12 months, Head Coach Mark Dunning clearly decided now was as good a time as any to ensure that Mikey would remain a mainstay in Birmingham (and he succeeded!).

Speaking with Canes TV, Mikey described his excitement at being offered a contract extension by the club:

When Mark approached me I jumped at the opportunity to extend with the Hurricanes.

I’m really enjoying my time at The Alex. The Canes are a club that I believe are making massive steps to build a solid foundation and a successful future rather than spending their way to success unsustainably, and I want nothing more than to do my best to help the club move forward with this aim by continuing to play my best rugby!

Up the Canes! My heads on fire!!

CanesTV also spoke with Mark about Mikey’s decision to extend his contact:

We’re delighted that Mikey has agreed to commit his future to the club for the next three seasons.

Mikey brings a lot to the group; we (as well as our fanbase) saw what he brings to the team with his contributions on the field last year. His previous experience at Championship level will be extremely important to us going into our maiden season in the second tier, and his unbridled commitment to the club and the wider Hurricanes project is evident.

We’re looking forward to Mikey replicating his efforts in a Canes jersey next season as he enters the prime stages of his career. We have no doubt he will continue to impress our loyal fans and embody the attitude we expect out of anybody lucky enough to pull on a Hurricanes shirt.

We’re sure we speak for everyone when we say we’re excited to see what Mikey will do in a Canes shirt for the next three years.
