CHRIMES EXTENDS UNTIL 2028

We are delighted to confirm that fan-favourite and prolific try-scorer Matty Chrimes has joined Mikey Wood in agreeing an extension to his contract that will see him at The Alex until at least the end of the 2028 season.

Chrimes, 28, made his debut for the Canes whilst on loan from Sheffield Eagles during our famous 10-41 demolition of Doncaster towards the end of the 2023 season. He would go on to play three games on loan for the Canes, scoring three times (twice against Rochdale, once against London Skolars) before eventually leaving the eagles for then-newly promoted side Swinton Lions ahead of the 2024 season. He would eventually return to the club on loan again from Swinton for two stints (scoring four tries in five games) before going on to sign a permanent deal with the Canes until the end of the 2026 season.

Ahead of his first full season at The Alex, Matty would be selected by Head Coach Mark Dunning as part of the Canes wider leadership group alongside Captain Callum McLelland, Vice-Captain Jon-Luke Kirby, Ross Oakes and Jose Kenga. A regular feature on the wing (and occasionally at full-back), Matty would finish the 2025 season as our top try-scorer with 12 tries in just 17 games, including an impressive acrobatic finish as he leapt over Konrad Hurrell to score in the corner against Swinton Lions. With 22 tries in just 31 games, Matty will no doubt be keen to add to his record in 2026 and beyond.

Mark Dunning spoke with us regarding securing Matty for the next three years:

We’re delighted that Matty has committed his future to the Canes until the end of the 2028 season.

Matty’s a potent finisher as we saw last year with 12 tries in 17 games and I know he’s looking to build on that next year and beyond.

He’s one of our senior players and – at the ripe age of 28 – we believe he is coming into his prime playing years. We’re excited to see what he brings in a Canes shirt and I’m sure that will be shared by our loyal fans in the stands whether at home or on the road.

Matty also spoke with us about his decision to remain at The Alex until 2028:

I’m absolutely buzzing to get another couple of years locked in on my contract – I have loved my time at the Canes so far.

I think with the team that’s been assembled for this year we should be looking to compete with the top teams in the Championship, which is where this club deserves to be. I’m excited to be a part of that line-up and to play my part in the club’s first ever season in this competition.

Up the Canes!
