MCGOWAN ON BOARD FOR 2027

We are delighted to confirm that the club has exercised it’s option in Aidan McGowan’s contract that will see the Irish international stay at Avery Fields until at least the end of the 2027 season.

McGowan, 24, joined the Canes shortly after the 2026 Championship season had gotten underway following his release from Super League side Huddersfield Giants and a short trial period at fellow Championship side Newcastle Thunder.

Immediately cementing his position on the wing, Aidan became a regular contributor to the Hurricanes scoreboard as he scored 17 tries in just 23 games, making him the fourth highest try-scorer in 2026 behind Ryan Johnson, Lewis Else (both 18) and Matty Chrimes (25). He would also wow fans with his ability to regularly avoid tackles and make breaks through the middle early into return sets.

It therefore perhaps comes as no surprise that the Canes were keen to tie him down and secure his services for the 2027 season, and following discussions it was agreed that the club would exercise its option in his contract to achieve that aim.

On securing an extension, Aidan McGowan said:

I’m absolutely buzzing to be back at the Hurricanes in 2027.

I joined early last year and really enjoyed last season. The staff and the lads are great, as well as the loyal supporters – which is what the club is built on – are great people ! We had a good year last year, and we are looking to build on it this year and go all the way.

I’m looking forward to keep building the game down in Birmingham and to be apart of this club for another season!

Mark Dunning, Men’s Head Coach, said:

We’re delighted that Aidan has committed his future to the club and remaining a member of the Canes family.

Since joining mid-season last year, he has had a really positive impact on our squad and his performances have undoubtedly earned him his extension.

He’s the ultimate pro and drives standards throughout the team with both his actions and his words on and off the pitch.

We’re looking forward to seeing Aidan kick on again in 2027 and take his game to the next level.

Aidan is just our second piece of off-season news (along with Luis Roberts extension) for 2027, but after a quiet week at Canes HQ we have plenty of exciting squad, staff and partner news to bring your way. Watch this space!
